Why I Wrote The Unofficial Out-of-State Family Guide to the University of Georgia

If you’ve ever sent (or are about to send) your child to college far from home, you already know this truth: no one really prepares the parents.

When my family began the University of Georgia journey from out of state, I expected excitement. What I didn’t expect was the constant second-guessing, late-night Googling, and group texts that started with “Wait… did you know about THIS?”

  • Where should we stay for move-in?
  • How do we get her things from A to B?
  • Is it feasible to stay in Athens during football game weekends?
  • What do we actually need to bring, and what’s a waste of space?
  • How do we get around Athens if we don’t know the area?
  • Do we need to make the trip for orientation?

I searched everywhere for a clear, honest, parent-to-parent resource that explained what life at UGA looks like from the family side. What I found were scattered blog posts, outdated Facebook threads, and official information that didn’t quite answer the real questions.

So I wrote the guide I wish I had.

What This Ebook Is (and Isn’t)

out-of-state guide UGA

The Unofficial Out-of-State Family Guide to the University of Georgia is not an admissions guide. It’s not sponsored by UGA. And it’s definitely not written in polished brochure language.

It is a practical, real-world guide created by a parent (me) who’s already navigated the surprises, stressors, and “I wish someone had told me that” moments of sending a student to Athens from far away.

This guide is designed to save you:

  • Time spent searching for answers

  • Money wasted on bad hotel bookings or unnecessary purchases

  • Stress during already emotional transitions

What You’ll Find Inside

This ebook walks you through the things families actually want to know, including:

  • Move-in and logistics: what to bring, what not to bring, and how to plan when you’re traveling hours (or flights) away

  • Where to stay: realistic hotel expectations, timing tips, and alternatives when everything is booked

  • Game day weekends: what to expect, how far in advance to plan, and how to enjoy Athens even if you’re not a die-hard football fan

  • Getting around Athens: transportation, parking realities, and navigating campus as a visitor

  • Parents’ Weekend and special events: how to plan without overpaying or overbooking

  • Local insight you won’t find on the official website

Everything is written with out-of-state families in mind, because your experience is different.

Who This Guide Is For

This ebook is for:

  • Parents whose student just committed to UGA

  • Families preparing for orientation or move-in

  • Anyone feeling overwhelmed by the distance and logistics

  • Parents who want to feel confident instead of constantly playing catch-up

Whether your student is a freshman or you’re already a year in and still feel like you’re figuring it out as you go, this guide meets you where you are.

Why “Unofficial” Matters

The best advice I received didn’t come from brochures. It came from other parents in hotel lobbies, Facebook groups, and hurried conversations during drop-off.

This guide brings all of that lived experience into one place. It’s honest, practical, and written with empathy for families doing something really hard: letting go while still wanting to get it right.

A Note From Me to You

Sending a child out of state is equal parts pride, fear, excitement, and heartbreak. You don’t need to have everything perfectly planned, but you do deserve better information.

If this guide helps you feel more prepared, more grounded, or simply less alone in the process, then it’s done exactly what I hoped it would do.
